Prof. Peter Munk Delivers Insightful Lecture on Palliative Management of Musculoskeletal Disease

On 11 May 2026, the Department hosted an informative seminar by Professor Peter Munk, Professor of Diagnostic Radiology at The University of British Columbia, who delivered a lecture titled “The Hopeless Case: Palliating Musculoskeletal Disease Using Cement and Ablation”. The hybrid event attracted over 150 participants, reflecting strong interest across disciplines.
In his lecture, Prof Munk addressed the critical role of radiology in improving quality of life for patients with advanced and end stage musculoskeletal disease. Framing the discussion around what he described as “the hopeless case,” he challenged the notion that limited options exist for patients with severe disease burden. Instead, he demonstrated how image guided interventions can offer meaningful palliation when integrated into a multidisciplinary care approach.
The lecture underscored the evolving role of musculoskeletal radiologists as active contributors to patient centred care, even in advanced disease stages. Participants benefited from Prof Munk’s extensive clinical experience and practical insights, which also fostered a lively discussion among attendees.
